The Bessemer City Council voted unanimously Tuesday night to rezone some 35 acres along Eastern Valley Road so that a new garden home community can be built in the city limits.
The property is located at 5261 Eastern Valley Road and is owned by Sterling Lakes Holding, LLC of Birmingham.
The council vote rezoned the property from R-1 to R-3-A. Developers said they have approximately 142 lots on the site which they plan to use to develop into a garden home community. The community will include a swimming pool and a community center.
The garden homes will range in size from 1,800 to 2,200-square feet and will range in price from $190,000 to $230,000, developers told the City Council.
The first phase of the project is expected to start later this year.
In other development action, the City Council approved a request to rezone the property at 1318 Dartmouth Avenue from R-2 Single Family Residential to C-4 Arterial Services for the purpose of building a Family Dollar Store. The property is not far from the Bessemer Recreation Center and sits across from Greater Fourteenth Street Missionary Baptist Church along 14th Street or Highway 150.
